Love Underground, The Lobster & Other Tales - The Mephisto Ensemble In the audience of the Mephisto’s 1996 Purcell Room concert, were highly acclaimed composers of numerous film and television scores, Richard Harvey and Christopher Gunning. In the greenroom afterwards, with Mephisto violinist Manon Derome, they formulated a plan to write a work each for the group for festival performances and a future recording project, of which this disc is the outcome. Richard Harvey’s artistic “Love Underground” was conceived as an opera in miniature, with libretto written by artist Ralph Steadman. Christopher Gunning’s quirky “The Lobster” was written in 1998 and depicts the thoughts of a crustacean entering a trap!
